Letter from Ms. Hackmiller (Principal)

Dear Harmony Friends,

It’s hard to believe that we are swiftly moving into October.

Our first graders enjoyed a morning at Creasey Mahan this week for winning the summer learning links challenge.  After their quick trip, they incorporated some of the work they have been doing using “snap” words correctly in their writing.

On Tuesday, Oct. 1, educators, parents, students and education stakeholders will see for the first time how their local schools are performing under Kentucky’s new 5-star accountability system. The system can be viewed in the form of an online dashboard located at https://www.kyschoolreportcard.com.*  The report for each school or district will show graphics displaying the overall identification of one to five stars, federal designations, the performance on indicators (from very low to very high), and any statistically significant achievement gaps.

On October 14 our kindergarten students will travel to Gallerin Farms as they use observation to describe patterns of what plants and animals need to survive.

We recently started a Positive Office Referral initiative to recognize the attributes of leadership in our students.  We are having a blast celebrating each day with our Huskies as they demonstrate hard work, positive attitudes and effective effort.

I appreciate your patience with any transportation issues that have transpired in the past several weeks.  The district transportation department is working hard to train new bus drivers so that all of our routes are covered.  If you are choosing to drive your children to/from school, I kindly ask that you come through the car line in entirety and that you do not park at the entrance to the Longwood subdivision as it is causing some safety concerns for their residents.

I look forward to seeing you at our annual Harmony Harvest on Saturday, October 5, 5-8 pm. As always, thanks for your partnership.  If I can be of assistance to you please don’t hesitate to reach out

Stay well,

Suzie Hackmiller

Counselor’s Corner

The counselors' focus for September's guidance lessons was on bullying prevention. In K & 1 classes, we focused on friendship skills. In grades 2-5, we defined the term bullying and discussed the differences between bullying behavior and mean/rude behavior. Students were instructed to always report (tell a trusted adult) if they witness bullying behavior. Additional strategies were discussed as well. You can see more specific details regarding grade-level lessons shared on our Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/Harmony-Elementary-School-Counselors-106857890692795/ .

We are also preparing to start small groups, such as a group for students of divorced parents, and would love your help. We need a few items from our Amazon Wish List to enhance our experience with students. Thank you in advance for your support!

Book Character Day: October 31st

Harmony’s first annual school-wide Book Character Day Book will be held on October 31st.  All Huskies are encouraged to dress like their favorite (or semi-favorite or a familiar) character from a book.  No need to panic or spend money. Get creative and look through old costumes, toys, clothing or other props to create a costume. For example: while I really, really love the book The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane - I do not own anything that would be suitable for a rabbit costume. But I do have a Viking costume from a Halloween party...so I may dress up as the main character from How to Train Your Dragon because I also like that book. I also enjoy reading The Recess Queen - and all I need for that is my regular clothes and a crown that I wore at my birthday party. Your child’s class will be participating in a few character-study activities during school so please send in the book that matches their costume. The public library and school library are great resources for this! No masks, weapons or slippers, please.
