Change in Middle/High School Times
Doors will open for middle and high school car riders to enter schools at 8:15 a.m.
For more information, please check out the FAQs (below).
We recognize that these changes will require adjustments from students, staff, families, and the community. We appreciate your understanding in our efforts to ensure students arrive in time for the start of each school day.
Due to the shortage of bus drivers in recent years, a number of bus routes have been arriving to school late each day, causing students to miss out on the first 15+ minutes of school. By giving an extra 15 minutes between elementary and middle/high bus runs, we expect fewer delays.
Our first elementary students are already picked up at 6:00 a.m. We do not feel it is in the best interest of those students to pick them up any earlier.
Students must have supervision while in the school building. We do not have the manpower to safely supervise this population of students an hour before the start of the school day.
We expect it to stay in place for the entire school year, and perhaps beyond. If we are able to fill most of our driver openings, we may consider going back to 8:45 a.m. - 3:45 p.m. for the following school year.
We hire year round. The pool of applicants continues to decrease not only in Oldham County, but surrounding counties and all across the country. In fact, several school districts in Kentucky have had to cancel school or completely cancel bus routes due to lack of drivers to transport students to school. There simply aren’t enough people applying for employment in this sector.
By law, school bus drivers must be CDL certified with a school bus endorsement to transport pupils. This process requires several weeks of training. We have opened up the opportunity for staff to be trained, drive, and receive extra compensation for picking up routes. We currently have a handful of staff members pursuing this option.
We typically have 45-50% of eligible students as bus riders. As gas prices continue to increase, we expect the number of bus riders to increase as well.
We are looking once again to consolidate stops on routes, where possible, which will shorten route times. Bus route information will be available in early August.
Consider driving for OCS or asking anyone you know to apply! Not only is it a great place to work, but our families and students are the best around. Our on-site mechanic shop is top-notch and our mechanics and dispatch operators are there to provide immediate help and support to drivers. Our routes are shorter than most districts, and you get full-time benefits with as little as five hours of work per day! We will train you on-site to get your CDL and pay you while you train.
