Course Description: English 1 continues to develop student’s language arts abilities in reading, writing, speaking, and thinking gained in the elementary and middle school. Students read and respond in a variety of ways to all types of literature and practice the stages of the writing process by composing for a variety of purposes and audiences. The students refine their abilities to handle conventional matters of punctuation, spelling and usage within the context of their own writing.

Course Description: This course continues the refinement of students’ skills in language areas. Students read, respond to, and interpret a variety of types of literature and journalistic writing and continue the study of the writing process, reinforcing their writing skills in addressing a variety of audiences and purposes. There is a heavy emphasis placed on the various elements of literature and how those contribute to the overall understanding of what is being read and its relationship to everyday aspects of life. Student writing in context is used as the basis for teaching the skills of mechanics and usage. This course requires an End-of-Course Assessment and On-Demand Writing assessment as part of the K-PREP state assessment accountability for all sophomore students.

Course Description: AP Seminar is a foundational course that engages students in cross-curricular conversations that explore the complexities of academic and real-world topics and issues by analyzing divergent perspectives. Using an inquiry framework, students practice reading and analyzing articles, research studies, and foundational, literary, and philosophical texts; listening to and viewing speeches, broadcasts, and personal accounts; and experiencing artistic works and performances. Students learn to synthesize information from multiple sources, develop their own perspectives in written essays, and design and deliver oral and visual presentations, both individually and as part of a team. Ultimately, the course aims to equip students with the power to analyze and evaluate information with accuracy and precision in order to craft and communicate evidence-based arguments. There is a $40.00 additional AP Fee above the charge of the AP Exam Fee. 
*Students may qualify for an AP Capstone Diploma by successfully completing both AP Seminar and AP Research (offered 2019-2020 school year); score a 3 or better on both AP Seminar and AP Research Exams.; and have a score of 3 or better on 4 other AP Exams of the student's choice.

Course Description: This course continues to develop students’ competencies in language arts skills. Content includes instruction in oral and written composition; study skills and reference and research techniques; and the historical, cultural, and aesthetic significance of American literature. Continuing to practice the steps in the writing process, students write for a variety of purposes (e.g. to express thought and feeling, to persuade) and a variety of audiences (i.e. self, academic). As in English 1 and 2, mechanics and usage are taught within the context of students’ compositions. This course requires On-Demand Writing assessment as part of the K-PREP state assessment accountability for all junior students.

Course Description: This course focuses on academic writing. It provides instruction in drafting and revising essays that express ideas in Standard English, including reading critically, thinking logically, responding to texts, addressing specific audiences, researching and documenting sources. This course includes review of grammar, mechanics and usage, Notes: (a) credit not available by special examination; (b) English 101 and 102 may not be taken concurrently; (c) AP credit in the English Language and Composition category for ENG 101 awarded as indicated by AP scoring chart in current KCTCS catalog. This course requires On-Demand Writing assessment as part of the K-PREP state assessment accountability for all junior students.

Course Description: The AP English Language and Composition course is designed to help students become skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts and to become skilled writers who can compose for a variety of purposes. By their writing and reading in this course, students should become aware of the interactions among a writer's purposes, audience expectations, and subjects, as well as the way generic conventions and the resources of language contribute to effective writing.

Course Description: This course offers continued refinement of students’ abilities in language arts skills. Content includes appropriate experiences in reading and in oral and written composition, studying the historical, cultural, and aesthetic significance of world literature. Continuing to write for a variety of purposes (e.g., self and others), students attain confidence in handling this stage of the writing process. Attention to writing analytically about literature is given in this course. Language and mechanics concerns are dealt with in the context of student writing and publication.

Course Description: This course is an introductory college-level literary analysis course. Students cultivate their understanding of literature through reading and analyzing texts as they explore concepts like character, setting, structure, perspective, figurative language, and literary analysis in the context of literary works.
