Diploma Recognition

a. Definition

The diploma recognition policy is designed to encourage students to take the most rigorous courses available, by rewarding students for their efforts through recognition at graduation.

b. Types    

Students may receive “Excellence in” different areas. (see description below).

Diploma with Excellence In... 
    
AP Scholar with Distinction

  • Must receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken prior to the senior year
  • Must score 3 or higher on five or more exams prior to the senior year

National AP Scholar

  • Must receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken prior to the senior year
  • Must score 4 or higher on six or more exams prior to the senior year
  • Must take at least 8 AP exams by end of senior year (i.e. on track to be a National AP Scholar, even though AP exam scores will not be in until after graduation)

AP Capstone

  • Must Score 3 or Higher on AP Seminar Exam
  • Must Score 3 or Higher on AP Research Exam 
  • Must Score 3 or Higher on 4 other AP Exams

Art

  • Must complete 4 credits in Studio Art Courses 
  • Must Complete AP Studio Art 
  • Must be an active member of National Art Honor Society (senior year) 
  • Received an award in Scholastic Art and Writing Awards
  • Must Submit a Senior Art Portfolio to Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

Band
Students must complete 3 of the following requirements:

  • Audition and be selected for All District Band
  • Audition and be selected for KMEA All-State Band
  • Participate in Solo and Ensemble Festival and receive Distinguished Rating
  • Participate in volunteer performance ensemble - Musical Orchestra, Jazz Band, Marching Band, Louisville Youth Orchestra, Church Orchestra, or Community Band
  • Study privately for at least two years

Choir

  • Audition and be selected for KMEA All-State Chorus
  • Be member for in Advanced Concert Choir, Advanced SSAA Choir, or Advanced Acappella Choir
  • Participate in KMEA District Festival and receive Distinguished Rating
  • Participate in outside performances such as Louisville Youth Choir, church or community choir, musical productions
  • Study privately

Career & Technology Education (CTE)

  • Pass the State KOSSA test (Kentucky Occupational Skills Standards Assessment) in his or her area of concentration and awarded a certificate
  • Drama
  • Must complete Drama I, Drama II, and Essentials in Acting and Directing with at least a 90% 90% in each course
  • Must demonstrate leadership by serving as one of the following: Student Director, Major Role, Choreographer, Stage Manager, Sound Manager, Lighting Manager or Scenic Designer and Constructor

Journalism 
Must meet two of the following criteria:

  • Membership in Quill and Scroll (National Journalism Honor Society)
  • Placing in at least one area of the KHSJA State Competition
  • Placing in a regional or national competition approved by the teacher 
  • Completion of two credits of journalism at SOHS
