Selection of Extracurricular and Cocurricular Programs and Determination of Policies Relating to Participation
a. Extracurricular Activities (defined)
Extracurricular programs shall consist of all activities conducted during non-school/non-instructional hours under the auspices of the school both on and off school campus. Some types of extracurricular programs in which students may participate as members are athletics, cheerleading, dance team, academic team, and marching band. The school provides direct supervision to all students participating as members of the extracurricular activity.
Cocurricular Activities (defined)
Cocurricular programs shall consist of all activities conducted during the school day or under the auspices of the school both on and off campus. Some examples of cocurricular programs are club activities, field trips, and school competitions. The school provides direct supervision to all students participating as members of the cocurricular activity.
Other Activities (defined)
While extracurricular and cocurricular programs and activities are supervised by faculty and sponsors, some other activities, programs and events associated with the school are not fully supervised. Some examples are sporting events drama productions, dances, concerts (i.e. band and choir) and festivals. The school will not provide direct supervision to students that are non-members of participating organizations.
b. Standards
Each extracurricular and cocurricular organization shall submit in writing to the principal their standards for participation. The principal shall review and approve these standards prior to club approval. After the initial approval, only changes to the standards need to be submitted on a yearly basis. All extracurricular and cocurricular organizations shall be approved by the council.
c. Active Status
To remain active in extracurricular and cocurricular organizations a student must be in compliance with KHSAA By-Laws and where applicable, OCBE Policies, and SBDM Policy in regards to GPA, grade level-credits, and pass/fail.
A student can be removed or suspended from participation in an extracurricular or cocurricular organization according to guidelines established by the KHSAA, OCBE Policies, SBDM Policies and Student Code of Acceptable Conduct or Athletic Code of Conduct. Students can be removed from observing any school activity or event according to guidelines established by national club/organization rules, team or club rules and/or standards for the group, OCBE Policies, administrative policies, and SBDM Policies.
d. Appeals
A student removed or suspended from an extracurricular or cocurricular organization has due process rights. Students/Parents must be notified in writing by the Coach/Sponsor (a copy of this policy must be included). The initial appeal should be placed in writing to the attention of the Coach/Sponsor within five school days. The Coach/Sponsor has five school days to respond. Appeals of the ruling from the Coach/Sponsor should be placed in writing within five school days of the decision to the school principal. Final appeal of the principal’s decision should be placed in writing within five school days of the decision to the Superintendent; Refer to OCBE Policy 9068.
