NOMS Chromebook Program FAQ
Q: How do students at NOMS use Chromebooks?
A: Teachers and students use Chromebooks each day at NOMS. Most of the textbooks, notebooks, worksheets and other handouts we use on campus are shared with students electronically, completed online and graded electronically. Teachers organize their classrooms using Google Classroom and post grades to electronic gradebooks on Infinite Campus.
Q: How long has NOMS been a 1:1 Chromebook School?
A: Through fundraising and matching funds from the Commonwealth of Kentucky, NOMS started purchasing Chromebooks in 2015. We have been a 1:1 school since the 2017-18 school year.
Q: How are Chromebooks monitored at school?
A: Teachers will use a monitoring software called Hapara while the Chromebook is at school. This software allows the teacher to see your child’s Chromebook screen, track the websites that your child visits and block specific websites from the administrative terminal. Chromebook monitoring ends when the school day is over. Teachers will not monitor Chromebook use outside of school.
Q: What is the Chromebook Leasing Program?
A: NOMS is the only 1:1 Chromebook School in Oldham County and we were selected to implement a leasing program that started in the 2019-20 school year. Through this pilot program, students in 6th, 7th and 8th will lease a Chromebook during the 2021-22, 2022-23, 2023-24 school years. They will take this Chromebook to and from school and use this to complete their school assignments both on and off campus.
Q: How much does the lease cost for 6th and 7th grade?
A: 6th & 7th grade students will pay $110 per year. 8th grade students will pay $105.
Q: What does the cost of the Chromebook cover?
A: The yearly lease covers the cost of the Chromebook, an insurance policy that will fix accidental damages to the Chromebook, monitoring software for teachers at NOMS, setup of the device on our school network, and access to a loaner computer when necessary.
Q: If my 6th grader student damages their Chromebook, do I have to pay additional fees?
A: No. The leased Chromebook is sent to Dell and the cost of the repair will be covered by the Leasing Program.
Q: What happens at the end of the Chromebook Lease?
A: At the end of the Chromebook Lease, students will have the option to purchase their Chromebook at its fair market value. Should you not want to purchase the Chromebook, it will be sent back to the company.
Q: What type of Chromebook will students receive through the Chromebook Leasing Program?
A: Dell Chromebook 11 3100- Education Edition or
HP Chromebook 11 G8 - Education Edition
Q: Can my child bring their personal Chromebook or laptop from home to school?
A: This is the first year of our leasing program that we are allowing students to choose to bring their own device. However, please consider the following:
We cannot monitor what students are doing on devices that are brought from home. This means that students might gain access to games, music or other inappropriate content while at school.
We cannot take financial responsibility for privately owned Chromebooks or laptops that are lost, stolen or damaged while on campus.
Opening our school’s network to outside devices will enable students to add cell phones and other wifi enabled technology. This will quickly overwhelm our network and slow down internet access for everyone.
Q:If my student brings their own Chromebook and is misusing it, what will happen?
A: We will issue a school owned device that has monitoring software installed. There will be a $25 fee to cover the cost of monitoring software and maintenance. They are still responsible to pay for damages to the school owned equipment. The price breakdown for repairs of issued devices are as follows:

Q: Can my child keep their Chromebook at school?
A: Yes. Parents can require their child to check the Chromebook in at the end of each day in the Library Media Center.
Q: Does NOMS monitor my child’s Chromebook use at home?
A: No. Monitoring ends at the end of each school day. When a student is using their Chromebook on your home wifi network, they are under the supervision of their parent(s) or guardian(s).
Q: Can my child watch Netflix on their Chromebook at night?
A: It is up to each family to determine how their child uses their Chromebook at home.
Q: Can I get a cover for my child’s Chromebook?
A: Yes. Students may add a cover to their Chromebook.
