THIS WEEK AT SOUTH

 

  • Conditioning for today, Tuesday October 14th, for SOHS Girls Lacrosse is cancelled.
  • Please sign up for the Ski Club this week if possible. Info at rooms 135 or 222.
  • Juniors that are taking the PSAT on Wednesday need to turn in their transportation forms to Mr. Beall as soon as possible.
  • SOHS Red Ribbon Week will be 10/13 to 10/17 before fall break. The theme is----Love Yourself Be Drug Free.  We encourage all students and staff to wear anything Red during this week and stop by our table in the lobby near the cafeteria for a treat during lunch period. Students stop by our table we will have all kind of activities and prizes every day during that week.
  • NHS - there will be a meeting for new members on October 14 at 8:15 or 3:50 in Room 137.  Please plan to attend either the morning or afternoon meeting.  Don't forget - the induction ceremony will be on October 29th from 7-8 p.m. in the SOHS cafeteria.  Contact Dr. Bentley with any questions.
  • G.A.T.E.’s and the Oldham County Schools Arts Center invite ALL High School students interested in getting an arts related college degree to attend the Arts and Communication Symposium on Tuesday, October 14th from 8am-2pm at the Arts Center. Interested students can go to the Oldham County School District or Arts Center’s websites for more information and to download forms. This is a FREE event and an excused absence. All you need is approval by you assistant principal. All forms need to be turned in to your GATES building coordinator by October 8th.
  • Just a reminder that the next College and Career Night Program of the school year is TUESDAY, October 14, from 7-8 pm in the South Oldham High School Cafeteria.   The event is open to all Oldham County students and families.
    The ACT, PSAT, & SAT Tests: What You Should Know Before Taking Them & How They Affect College Admission and Scholarship Opportunities
    Additionally, a representative from Oldham County Community Scholarships will address the availability of over $78,000 in scholarship dollars for Oldham County high school seniors and will be on hand to answer questions.
     
  • Attention Seniors:
    Fundraising orders are due October 14th to Ms. Johnson or Ms. Jordan.  Do NOT turn in money at this time; you will collect money when you deliver the items ordered.
     
  • There is an FCCLA meeting after school in room 201 on Wenesday, Oct. 15th.
     
  • The Marines will be visiting during all lunch periods on October 16.  Find out about the many educational opportunities the Marine Corps has to offer.  Also, start applying to the NROTC scholarship (Marine Option).  Received $150,000 for tuition and all books, lab fees and uniforms are cover.  Most colleges waive the housing fee.  The scholarship is accepted at any College or University that has a NROTC program.  Please contact Staff Sergeant Serpas at 502-718-2653 for more details or go to Marines.com.

  • South Oldham High School was one of six area high schools chosen by the Louisville Orchestra to perform with them in Carl Orff's large work Carmina Burana this October 16 and 17.  Fifteen SOHS Choir students will be singing with 350 other singers from Floyd Central, Eastern, Ballard, Male, and YPAS, as well as the Collegiate Chorale from UofL, Voces Novae, and the Louisville Chamber Choir.  The concerts are open to the public and tickets can be obtained at the Kentucky Center for the Arts box office.

  • Mr. Blackburn will be selling parking passes to Juniors and Seniors during fall break.

  • The next Stammtisch meeting will be Tuesday 28 October after school in room 207.  All members should plan on attending.  Members of Mannschaft Stuttgart need to see Herr Effingham before fall break.
     
  • The next PTSA Meeting will be on Tuesday, October 28th.  Please join us at 9am in the Reference Room.  If you have anything you would like to discuss, please contact Christy Michaud at kymichauds@gmail.com.
     
  • Reflection packets ARE available for students to pick up in the office.  They will be due Oct. 29 after fall break.  Each student needs to summit two copies.   The theme this year is “The World Would BE A BETTER PLACE IF…"

  • The guidance office will be closed for fall break.  If your student will be taking the driver’s permit test during that week, please stop by the guidance office before fall break and pick up their School Compliance Verification Form.
  • Anyone currently playing a fall sport that plans to try-out for boys basketball team must see Coach Simpson in the gym to sign up.
  • Anyone interested in trying out for baseball this spring that has not already been in contact with the coaching staff should send their contact information (email address, player name and grade) to Monica at dcmom998@gmail.com
  • ATTENTION STUDENTS GRADES 9, 10, & 11:
    Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs (GSE) will begin its application period on November 1-December 12, 2014

    Students who attend GSE’s three-week, residential program will learn from guest speakers, take field trips to innovative businesses and work with professional mentors.  Applying STEM skills they design and build a prototype of their innovative product or service.  The session culminates with the teams giving an oral business pitch presentation to an outside panel of entrepreneurs, investors and professionals.  See the website for student testimonials and more information 
  • Please leave your Nintendo devices at home.  Using them at school causes the wireless network to fail.

  • ESS schedule: Tuesday – English and Science; Wednesday – Math; Thursday – English, Math, and Social Studies.  Foreign language must be scheduled with the teacher.
  • ATTENTION JUNIORS AND SENIORS & PARENTS:  If you are planning on using a college visit please remember that you need to submit a request in writing from a parent/guardian to the attendance office no later than a week prior to the first day of absence.   Juniors you are allowed 1 college visit and seniors you are allowed 2 college visits.   If you do not submit your request to the attendance office a week prior to the first day of absence you not be eligible to use your allocated College Visit days.  Also remember that College Visitation Policy follows the same as the OCBE Vacation Policy which may not be used before or after an extended break such as three-day weekends and holiday breaks.
  • ATTENTION SENIORS:  To be eligible for PTSA scholarship a parent and Senior Student must be a member of the PTSA.
  • Student Drivers – If you park in the area where the band practices your vehicle must be moved everyday by 4:00. Thanks for your cooperation.
  • FCA will meet every Wednesday at 8:05 in the GYM.
  • Veterans Memorial Park of Kentucky is hosting a contest open to all public and private Oldham County students. The contest includes two competitions:

 

* Create a video up to two minutes on the project with a focus on youth participation (this would be the type of video that is uploaded to YouTube).  The contest winner would receive $200.
* Create an artist rendering of a completed Park.  The contest winner would receive $100.
                  The entries are due no later than January 2nd. See attached fliers for details.
