The Oldham County Middle School, organized in September 1973, located in Buckner, Kentucky. In 1967, the ninth grade was removed from the Oldham County High School organization, and the Oldham County Junior High School came into being with grades 7, 8, and 9. The large increases in the high school enrollment forced the Board of Education to drop the ninth grade from the junior high and to switch buildings with the high school.
The seventh and eighth grades became the Oldham County Middle School using the building which had served as Oldham County High School from 1953 to 1972. In the same year, the school colors of blue and white were selected, and the school mascot became the "Little Colonel."
In 1977, OCMS moved into a new building at our present site on Highway 146. The middle school was expanded in 1978 when we welcomed the sixth grade from Liberty Elementary. In 1979, Oldham County was redistricted so that there were two middle schools. All of the sixth grade students from the Centerfield, LaGrange and Liberty school districts came to OCMS, and we now have a complete middle school with grades 6, 7, and 8.
Throughout the years, many scheduling changes have taken place. In 1980, OCMS moved into a program offering interdisciplinary, cooperative teaching through a seven-period day. Students worked with a team of academic teachers as well as a team of related arts teachers. In 1997, OCMS changed to block scheduling utilizing four 90 minute periods per day. Recently scheduling has moved back to a more traditional model of 65 minute periods and a 25 minute "Wellness" period at the end of the day. This allows students to remain active in a variety of inside and outside games and activities coupled with an intentional character education component. Team teaching is still in effect at the middle school with three 6th and two 7th and 8th grade teams.
Oldham County Middle School offers a wide variety of activities for its students not only through classes, but also through extracurricular activities. Some of these include intramural/interscholastic basketball, football, track, cross country, and Beta Club. Students may also explore a wide variety of interests through classes like the yearbook, chorus, and the dance team.
Every year Oldham County Middle School focuses on a main theme. This year's theme is "Whatever It Takes II (The Sequel)." Our goal as a staff is to motivate students by whatever means necessary to improve student learning. We expect the same effort from our students. The faculty, staff and principals would like to welcome you to Oldham County Middle School and hope you enjoy your visit.
