The Oldham County Middle School, organized in September 1973, is located in Buckner, Kentucky.

In 1967, the ninth grade was removed from the Oldham County High School organization, and the Oldham County Junior High School came into being with grades 7, 8, and 9. The large increases in the high school enrollment forced the Board of Education to drop the ninth grade from the junior high and to switch buildings with the high school.

The seventh and eighth grades became the Oldham County Middle School using the building which had served as Oldham County High School from 1953 to 1972. In the same year, the school colors of blue and white were selected, and the school mascot became the "Little Colonel."

A Message From the Principal...

Chris Kraft
OCMS Principal

When I think of January I most often think about the new year ahead and what I’d like to get accomplished before the next time Dick Clark coaxes down the crystal ball in Times Square. It is a time for assessing my current priorities and making decisions about how I want to focus my energy for the next twelve months. Many parents and students go through the same process in January only to find that in the span of a month or so the feeling of idealism has given way to dealing with reality.

In education we don’t have the luxury of dealing only with reality. As a school we have to constantly reassess our current position and make adjustments as they are needed. Such is the business of educating children. Recently we have completed updating the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP) that outlines our instructional program for this year. A copy of this document can be obtained from the school office or downloaded from the school website. I would encourage each of you to look at this document as it represents our goals and resolutions for the new year.

I would like to further challenge each parent to resolve to become involved in the educational process here at OCMS. We know that the overwhelming factor contributing to the success of a child is the partnership between the family and the school. This can be achieved by some very simple and easy steps. Let me suggest a few:

  • Read with your child
  • Check your child’s homework and daily agenda book
  • Stay in regular contact with your child’s teachers by phone, email or conference
  • Keep the school informed of changes in medication, medical history, or recent family problems

By undertaking just these few simple steps you will enhance your child’s potential for success exponentially. As always we stand by to help in any way that we are needed. Here’s to a great 2010!
