Early Childhood Music Program

The Early Childhood Music Program provides parent-child classes for children ages 0-5. An early childhood music class is an informal learning experience that provides a rich, musical environment in which your child can play, move, dance, and sing, all while growing in their musical development. Lessons consist of songs, chants, and movement activities accompanied by the use of fun props such as egg shakers, rhythm sticks, scarves, parachutes, and percussion instruments.

An early childhood music class is a parent-child experience.  Parents/caregivers are as involved in the music and activities as the teacher.  They, along with the teacher, provide the best model for their children.  Parents, grandparents, babysitters, and other guardians are welcome to be the adult that attends with the child.

Goals of the activities throughout each lesson consist of one or more of the following:

-          Developing a sense of steady beat

-          Hearing the resting tone or “home pitch” of a song

-          Experiencing both fast and slow tempi

-          Learning locomotor movements and connecting them to the steady beat

-          Experiencing flowing movement

-          Learning, High and Low Pitch, Staccato and Legato, Forte and Piano

-          Exposure to songs that are Major and minor, but also songs in unusual tonalities

-          Exposure to chants that are in duple and triple meter, but also chants in unusual meters and mixed meters

-          Developing a musical and rhythmic vocabulary through simple pattern instruction

-          Experience with small percussion instruments

-          Listening to recordings from various genres and cultures

By coming to a weekly class, children and parents have the opportunity to be a part of a small community with their class.  They look forward to seeing their friends each week and experiencing music together.

From birth to age 8, children are developing their music potential that will serve them the rest of their lives.  Early childhood music classes provide a rich, musical learning environment for young children to be exposed to songs, chants, and movement activities that build connections in their young brains and prepare them to be musicians for life.
