School For The Arts

The Oldham County Schools Arts Center, School for the Arts, provides fully funded arts education opportunities to benefit school district students.

High School Credit Courses

High School Credit Courses are semester or year long courses designed to prepare the student for high level performances, workshops, auditions, and college admittance and schoarships. Classes are open to all Oldham County School Students currently in 9th through 12th Grade by audtion. Classes are in addition to the student's regular high school course load and take place at a time that is outside of the school day. Each class includes specialized lessons and rehearsals from instructors as well as individual coachings. Students admitted are challenged in a variety of artistic concepts that specifically further their craft to meet the expectations of individual and ensemble goals.

Oldham County Jazz Connection
Oldham County Jazz Connection is a 25 piece big band consisting of 8th - 12th grade students, now in its seventh year.

Highlights:

  • Took top honors at the 2011 New Orleans Band Festival
  • 1st national competition win - top honors at the Smoky Mountain Music Festival 2008-09
  • Performances with Artist in Residence, Harry Pickens
  • Numerous School District and Arts Center functions.
  • Competitive audition process raises group to an elite level

Chamber Music Ensemble
Chamber Music Ensemble is comprised of 6th - 12th grade string and piano students. Rehearsals, coachings, master classes, and performances are all incorporated to create a complete, high-quality, and exhilirating musical experience.

2011-12 Highlights include:

  • successful performances for the KY Assoc. of Superintendents, All-County Events, and Educational Foundation Gala
  • 1st Place winner Senior Division, 3rd Place winner Junior Divisition - 2012 Louisville Arts Club Overstreet Comptetion
  • 5 students selected for th 2012 KY Ambassadors of Music European Tour

Summer Visual Art Institute

It is an intensive two week high school course designed to:

  • Deepen student learning in a variety of art concepts, media, techniques, and collaborative projects
  • Work in connection with other high school art courses to give students a stronger visual language
  • Further enhance student portfolios for:
    - Applying to university programs and art schools
    - Interviewing for Advanced Placement Courses
    - Auditioning for Gifted and Talented Visual Arts Identification
  • SVA Institute contract and syllabus created and approved by administration
 

Summer Visual Art Institute (Grades 9-12)
July 22 - August 2, 2013
Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 3:30 pm
$300 / Full Scholarship for Credit

To be accepted into the course students are required to audition for the institute by submitting a portfolio of 5 pieces of the student's choice. Admission is based on artistic merit and recommendation by their art teachers. This course is approved by the OCBE for one performance based credit. The Oldham County Schools Arts Center is offering a full tuition scholarship to students that successfully meet the requirements for credit.

Visual Art Portfolio Class
The Visual Art Portfolio Class is an individualized thirty week course for Grades 9 -12 and is designed to prepare the student for state and regional workshops and auditions.

Admitted students are challenged in a variety of art concepts that specifically further their work to successfully meet the goals of individual protfolio requirements.

Art Portfolio students have achieved:

  • 9 Governor's School for the Arts Admittances
  • 5 GSA Alternates
  • 1 National and 11 Regional Scholastic Gold Key Awards
  • 3 Ohio Weslyan University Full Studio Art Scholarships
  • 1 Bellarmine University Art Department Scholarship

Film Making Course
Film Making Class is a thirty week course designed for students who want to learn film direction but additionally want to acquire a specialized knowledge of all the technical skills that are used in film making including Cinematography, Sound, Editing, Acting, Production Design & Production. The course is aimed at helping to create a very unique kind of Film Director- one who has received an all round holistic training in all the technical aspects of film making - so that s/he can rightfully claim to be not just Film Directors but complete film makers. Call the Arts Center for an application form.

Arts Administration Internship
Arts Administration Internship admits 2-3 selected high school senior to an annual program of study at the Arts Center.

  • 4th year for students to be admitted to the program for credit
  • Student interns daily at the Arts Center from 2-3:30pm over an entire semester or school year
  • Intern works closely with Executive Director and other administrative staff on grant writing, marketing, and a third area of concentration of the student's choice
  • Upon successful completion of the course, student is awarded a paid 9 week summer administrative position at the Arts Center
